TERMITES
‣ IDENTIFYING TERMITES
Workers and soldiers have cream colored bodies, no wings, 1/4 in. or less in size.
Alates, known as swarmers, have long brown/black bodies and translucent wings, 1/4 in. to 1/2 in. in length.
They have 6 legs with 2 antennae with a Long, narrow and oval shape.
‣ SIGNS OF A TERMITE INFESTATION
An infestation can occur inside or outside of the home/structure. The most prominent sign is the presence of mud tubes on the exterior of the structure. They look like long tunnels made of soil and wood. Soft wood that sounds hollow when tapped in the home is also a sign, as well as uneven or bubbling paint. You may also see piles of feces that resemble sawdust in the vicinity of a termite nest. Discarded wings near doors or on windowsills also indicate that swarmers have entered and infested the home.
‣ CAUSE AND PREVENTION
Prevention is the most important point to make regarding termites. Avoid water accumulation near the home/structure's foundation as they are attracted to water. Direct water from gutters and downspouts away from the foundation. Continue regular upkeep of sealing cracks and crevices in the structure's foundation as well, to avoid access of the pests. Never bury wood scraps in your yard.
Termites eat wood 24/7 and over time can critically damage a building structure, sometimes resulting in total collapse. It's important to take measures to prevent termites before they happen.
